any interior designers out there?

I know it's TABOO to talk about income, but... I'm researching about how much entry-level FILIPINO interior designers IN THE PHILIPPINES make (from their inteior design projects, of course, not from their sidelines), where do they usually start when they get out of college, etc. And for successful interior designers, how'd they get to where they are. (Aside from hard work, that's a given, of course.)

My dad says that I'm supposed to find this out, and then reconsider whether I'll take ID in college. =\

Also if anyone can give me statistics/numbers/etc to prove that US-educated interior designers (given that they are hardworking and talented) make a WHOLE LOT MORE so that it's "worth it" to take ID abroad.

I know it's a long shot, but this is the Internet.. so baka.. may kilala kayo diyan na may kilala ni interior designer na papayag magshare ng info.

Thanks. ^_^

cripes! your dad is a business nazi! aren't you still like just 18 years old or something? shouldn't you be concerned with 'finding yourself' instead of how much money interior designers make?

...

i hate practicality!!

heheheh...she's like 17 and as far as "finding yourself" --filipinos, specially business minded fathers [mind you there are exceptions], couldn't give a rat's ass about that...it's all about the money.

trust me...i risked being disowned for not entering the medical field.

they only have the best intentions for their children.

yes yes yes, the more of asia i realize, the more north america truly does seem to rock the free world.

*sigh* yeah, they do have good intentions.

=\

But I mean. Interior Design isn't EASY. In fact it's a lot of math and a lot of technical stuff AS WELL AS art. ^_^ And I figure that careers with a lot of technical stuff are the careers that inherently must earn money because... not everyone can do those technical stuff. So they have to pay the people who know the technical stuff. :)

you're going to make a good living as an interior designer, believe me. as for me? i spent four years studying chinese history and english literature. i'm basically qualified to sit around thinking deep thoughts about being unemployed.

either way, do you know what the word 'galang' means? sounds like one of the words you'd know. it's the title of a pretty incredible song i heard yesterday.

Who was the band? I haven't heard of the song, or I've heard it around but I don't know its title. :) 'Galang', noun, means 'respect'... but I think if it's an adjective (preceding a noun) it might mean 'roaming' / 'wandering' / 'free'. If it's pronounced "gaaalang", it'd be the former. Haha, this is so much easier to explain offline!

the song's by m.i.a. but if you're searching on limewire you can just spell it mia. it's a pretty intense tune - not for the faint of heart. heavy techno. i think you're probably right about 'respect' being the meaning.

Thank God my parents aren't like that. They subscribe to the follow-your-heart-school of thought. (Which doesn't mean that they're impractical, they just think that there are ways balance things so that you can both do what you love and not starve to death.)

I work for the government. My brother's a lit major and wants to be a writer. We figure we'll just marry rich. :P

A good friend of mine's mother is an interior designer - I could ask him to ask for you.

Are there any specific questions I should ask?

Yay THANKS! :)

First of all, is she a really successful one (financially successful, well-known, sought-after by clients)?

1.a. How long did it take her to get that successful?
1.b. Did she become successful because she had lots of connections? (aside from being talented/hardworking of course)
2. Did she need to earn money from sidelines? Or it was really I.D. that brought in the money?
3. Where did she take up interior design?
4. Where did she start working when she graduated from college?
5. How much did she earn as an entry-level interior designer?
6. Do interior designers who studied abroad (US/Europe/etc) make much much more? How much more?

So.. yeah.. of course she doesn't have to answer all of those, and I'm not going to ask for her name. I just need hard concrete figures to prove this stuff to my dad. =\

THANK YOU! :)

well, my cousin took interior design and she's making good money now... of course, she's also working for a multinational corporation that makes freezers. i'm not sure how it's related to interior design, but trust me, that's what she finished. (she took it right here, though.)

She does interior design work for them? Or baka she's doing something else for them?

Hehe, thanks. :)

Check out Filipino-based design magazines, like BluePrint or something. I think the latest issue covered those stuff, pero pang-Industrial Design naman. Pero check out the past issues, baka meron. Check out foreign design magazines like Architectural Digest, too.

If you have the time, contact or visit the college you're supposed to enter, or institutions related to it (all I can think of now is the Philippine School of Interior Design, UP CHE, and the Design Center Philippines). Ask questions about your course - I'm sure that they know lots about the field. Konting guts lang ang kailangan. Well, you really want to know, don't you (and yeah, go with your dad, you want to convince him, right)?

I'll ask an LJ friend, too. She's quite busy at the moment, but I think she can help you.
